Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
