Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of files that included little new data.
